 I use a new copy of curl installed into /opt/bootstrap, and then build
 macports against that using the {{{--with-curlprefix=/opt/bootstrap}}}
 option. I've been doing this since 2016 on all my systems older than
 10.10, so everything MacPorts "just works" for me (git, perl, all the
 downloads are fine, on Tiger on up).

 Marcus added many deps to libheif due to opportunistic linking on newer
 systems, but most (all?) of them don't build on older systems, so I just
 reverted that commit locally while I sort out what to fix and when.
