 Thanks Ken for the info.  For new installations of Macports on older Mac
 OS's, I can see why one would need to build Macports directly from source
 using "--with-curlprefix=/opt/bootstrap".

 Unless I am missing something, I do not see how that would help an old
 Macports installation like mine where I was able to install the latest
 version of curl using Macports.

 But if I ever have to reinstall Macports on this old Mac, I definitively
 will do as you suggest -- build curl from source and install into
 /opt/bootstrap and build Macports from source using "--with-
 curlprefix=/opt/bootstrap".

 You mentioned that you "reverted that commit locally".  Is there an easy
 way to do that with Macports.  Unlike other package managers, I do not see
 an easy way to hold back a package from upgrading.  So I typically have to
 wait until packages get fixed.
