 I did do that and it worked. Quoting myself "Installation of m4 without
 +universal succeeded". In other words I did the command you've quoted
 above and it worked. So I don't understand where I am supposed to have run
 clean.

 So are you telling me that

 sudo port install openimageio +universal
 }}}

 is unusual? As I wrote, that is all I did and port took it upon itself to
 attempt to install m4 +universal.

 > Now, if I get time, or somebody else gets interested, we can see if m4
 will properly build {{{+universal}}} using the patch above or some other
 fix. We'd like it to build +universal. Somebody has to properly patch it
 to do so, then check that it all works properly.

 The patch worked for me.
