 If you did:
 {{{
 sudo port install m4
 }}}
 and then it installed, and then you did
 {{{
 sudo port install openimageio +universal
 }}}
 and macports insisted on trying to reinstall {{{m4 +universal}}} and would
 not use the installed {{{m4}}} that was already there, then that would be
 a variance from what is expected and from what I see indeed.

 I can't reproduce that at present, but if that is what you saw, then that
 is what you saw.

 I'll try on an Intel BigSur system and see if it behaves differently than
 an M1 BigSur system, which would be unexpected but nothing is impossible
 in this world I guess.
