 OK. how do we properly allow {{{mpich-default}}} to build with the default
 gcc-4.2 on Leopard (and Tiger), which works just fine?

 I don't mean to sound exasperated, but you realize there is no contest
 going on to see who can come up with the most complicated Portfile
 imaginable... :>

 The Portfiles should not be more complex than the software they are trying
 to install .

 The Portfiles should be so simple than anyone can see in 2 minutes what is
 going on. We are unfortunately heading badly down a different direction.
