 You needn't worry, `openmaintainer` was specifically removed to avoid
 having too many cooks in the kitchen.

 It's actually quite simple. Look for the following comment, in the "Target
 Compiler Logic" section of the port:
 {{{
 # Compilers supported across-the-board
 dict set clist gcc7 {macports-gcc-7}
 }}}

 Simply put your additions there, without surrounding them with any if-then
 logic.
