Comment (by rlhamil):

This can be a problem also on Snow Leopard (10.6) and even as recently as
Mojave (10.14), although on older OSs, there may be issues with libcrypto
(lack of support for current protocols or algorithms) as well as with the
OS certificate stash (which for open source programs may include
/etc/ssl/cert.pem and not (just?) what's in the Keychain(s)).

IMO, what needs to happen is that (a) mpstats needs to depend on the curl
port, and (b) it needs to always use the curl from the curl port, and not
any other version. That way, it would be using a version of curl (and
associated certificate stash) that could be updated even on an OS that no
 longer got updates.

One must suppose that this contributes to older OS versions (already
struggling) being quite underrepresented in the stats.

The recent LetsEncrypt certificate issues made this obvious on 10.14, but
other problems not necessarily related to certificates will still be
present on older OSs, even if that particular problem is mitigated on the
 server side.
