 I rarely select any variants except the default.  My experience has not
 been good when I do.  I don't know the reason why, but non-default
 variants tend to cause me problems.  So if a variant does not work It
 should be removed.  All variants should also be tested.  I know for a fact
 that in many cases they are not.  I also have success building with
 `+openblas`.  So yes, please change the default.
