 With an improved wrapper shell script I could look into the temporary sub-
 directory with the TIFF test file and also into its parent directory.
 File::Temp does create that temporary sub-directory and File::Spec
 concatenates in Perl file name and path name to something valid.

 I presume the problem lies in the kind of (non-login) account macports
 has. Invoking as root "`su macports -c convert.orig ...`" or  "`su
 macports -c <some shell> convert.orig ...`" convert.orig instantly (in
 Tiger terms) returns without any complaint.

 Does `ImageMagick's convert` have particular demands to the shell in which
 it runs? (Time for sleep now.)
