Comment (by rustydraper):

 I will certainly remove and re-install xcode.  That's not too painful.
 I'm reluctant to re-install MacOSX however, even though I realize that's
 likely the only way to guarantee a clean environment.  I will consider it
 if I can find some solid documentation on how to re-install it without
 losing data in my home directory.

 I'll keep you updated.  Again, thank you so much for all your efforts!
