Comment (by ryandesign):

 Is your user account what Apple calls an administrator account? Maybe that
 is what dictates whether your user is a member of `admin` or not. If it
 isn't an administrator account now, did it used to be back when you ran
 the MacPorts base `./configure` script? If so, maybe that explains why it
 used to work and does not now.
