Comment (by jmroot):

 All builds hardcode the rsync path as found at configure time, along with
 lots of other commands. If you don't want to use the one in /opt/local,
 use --with-rsync=/path/to/the/right/rsync or (easier) configure without
 /opt/local/bin in the PATH.
