 Still a mystery for me what goes wrong. It should be a bug on our side or
 my side locally, since it built earlier, including on my 10.6 ppc. But
 something changed to the effect of causing a failure, and only with this
 package (I am almost done rebuilding `R` stuff locally, and this is the
 only instance of such a failure, apparently).
