 I honestly cannot remember why I needed to go the active variant route.

 It might be related to your other ticket.

 Possibly since the conflicts list was never set properly, the need to lock
 out other variants required the use of active variants.

 Reading the comment I put in on the variant conflict loop, this might have
 been also needed due to tricking macports into using an older version of
 p5-dbd-mysql for mariadb as the latest version does not support mariadb
 only mysql8.

 Perhaps it's time to revmove the mariadb variants and suggest that others
 migrate to p5-dbd-mariadb?
