 The universal variant is not, in general, obsolete. However, because it is
 not the default, it is not tried as often, and some ports may
 inadvertently not build universal until those problems are discovered and
 fixed.

 The libomp port is programmed to default to the universal variant on macOS
 10.13 and earlier. #50511 explains why that was done.
