The policy is that default versions of Perl and Python change on Jan 1
every year. So they just did.
People had lots of time to make sure that the new versions of perl and
python would be fixed on all systems in time for this. I guess nobody did
that. I'm just building python 3.13 now on Tiger and Leopard PPC, and will
report back on success or failure.
Regarding the default GCC and CLANG -- that is a more of a looser
approach. The default clang and gcc are updated when it seems like a new
stable version is released. But often these get minimal testing to be
honest, and we might consider holding both back a year. Cutting edge
people want the latest versions. Folks like you want things to work, and
that is better served by holding back. Can't please everyone.
