 AFAICT the current situation on my box is as follows

 || gleam || macports || github ||
 || 1.9.1 || works || works ||
 || 1.10.0 || FAILS || works ||

 Given that according to dtruss the macports 1.10.0 build
 appears to send 8 fewer bytes on my box than the github 1.10.0 build.

 I made a diagram of the codepath for this request

 It's actually quite simple.  I don't see anything at this level that
 would account for this discrepancy.
