installing gettext on Intel Macs

I've tried a couple of times to use DarwinPorts to install a current version
of bash (since Apple's is older) on my MacBook Pro (and this works without a
hitch on my G5). However, the install of gettext as a dependency fails
every time, with output:
[root at dissonance root]# port install bash
---> Fetching gettext
---> Verifying checksum(s) for gettext
---> Extracting gettext
---> Applying patches to gettext
---> Configuring gettext
---> Building gettext with target all
Error: Target com.apple.build returned: shell command "cd

Hopefully someone can help sort this out, I'd love to get this to work.
