It's a Single Core Mac Mini, one year old. The OS is completely up-to date.
I tried sudo port sync and for a minute I thought it was going to work:

I am out of my depth trying to troubleshoot this. To be honest, I am using
MacPorts to avoid this kind of thing, but it really seems like the best
policy is once you get a working system, don't upgrade it, cause something
breaks every time.
