There was a conscious and considered decision to use separate  
portfiles for the different versions of Python, and not to use  
variants. I'll let someone who uses Python recall why that is.

I don't know if there's a built-in port command to do that, but  
there's always shell magic:

$ grep python25 python/*/Portfile | sed 's/^.*\/\(.*\)\/.*$/\1/'
