Split function broken in Perl 5.8.8

Works fine for me with either perl. I'm on 10.4.10 Intel.

$ /opt/local/bin/perl -e 'print join(":", split(/ */, "hi there"));'
h:i:t:h:e:r:e$ /usr/bin/perl -e 'print join(":", split(/ */, "hi  
there"));'
h:i:t:h:e:r:e$

It is somewhat possible to search the lists using a  
"site:lists.macosforge.org" restriction in Google, but I don't recall  
any prior discussion on the list about this topic.
