"man port" not working?

You probably do not need to remove MacPorts. If you do want to,  
instructions are in the FAQ:

$MANPATH is empty on my system, but "man port" still works fine.

In /opt/local do you have a symlink from man pointing to share/man? I  
do.

I believe you either need this symlink, or you need /opt/local/share/ 
man in your $MANPATH.
