My question is which operating system are you using? 10.4.10 ?  
10.3.x? what?
You need gcc 4 for OS 10.4.? and gcc 3 for OS 10.3.x

What Ryan said about using fink OR MacPorts not both, I fully agree  
with having tried that me self.
