"sudo: port: command not found" on OS X Tiger

I just recently reinstalled OS X Tiger on one of my extra hard drives (I've been using Leopard for a while). As part of the process I then installed MacPorts. Now when I try "sudo port selfupdate" all I get is "sudo: port: command not found" as if MacPorts doesn't exist. Is there a step I'm missing?
thanks
-Brent
