How to Get Mac Apps on the Mac OS X Dock?

After selecting "Application" for the File Format I also unchecked the
"Startup Screen".  

Anyone know how to get an icon like the one
in /opt/local/share/icons/hicolor/24x24/apps/gimp.png to be the
Application Icon that can be placed on the Dock?
