newbie question: .profile

That seems to be correct. /etc/profile is run first, then ~/.bashrc  
or ~/.bash_profile if it exists (I'm not sure in what order of  
preference).

We recommend you place /opt/local/bin and /opt/local/sbin before, not  
after, your existing path.
