Don't forget to add step 17

(17) Never do a port sync or port selfupdate

If you sync or selfupdate you run the risk of a new version of  
Freetype portfile over-writing your changes.

You should setup MacPorts to use local portfiles and make your own  
version of the freetype port. Or you can apply the changes to the  
Portfile every time it is updated.
