Problem with X11.app / DISPLAY

Hi,
  I tried doing some cleanup and deleted everything in my /tmp folder on mac osx leopard. Now no X11 application will load (inkscape, gimp, dia etc) because they can't find the display! I tried rebooting but this didn't work, and I moved x11.app to the trash and reinstalled it from xquartz but this didnt help either. When I run x11.app, it briefly appears in the mac panel, but then dissapears without loading or anything. How can I undo the mistakes I made?
