Gnome won't start

I installed gnome using macports on my g4 powerbook running 10.5.5 and
xquartz 2.3.1

I edited my .xinitrc following the instructions on the wiki page.
When I start X11, gnome desktop doesn't start up. I just get an x11
terminal window.

I tried moving .xinitrc out of the way and running exec gnome-session
from the terminal. This is the message I got:

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-CDlaQA/:0".
gnome-session[97208]: WARNING: No required applications specified

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-CDlaQA/:0".
** Message: another SSH agent is running at: /tmp/launch-WZ04Td/
Listeners

Please help!

Cameron
