That should be fine, in fact I just did a test install from 1.6.0 source
like this, though with different paths. The one big difference is I'm
running 10.5.5.

So it isn't a permissions thing but the directory is not apparently there.
After running the selfupdate, this directory should have been created and
populated with (at least) a Portfile. How much of that path does exist?
Was there an error message earlier than those chmod lines? Maybe rsync
failed to run properly?
