You should ask questions by emailing the macports-users list itself,  
not its owners, but to answer your question: you would install the  
latest version of Xcode for your OS from connect.apple.com, then  
install the latest version of MacPorts from www.macports.org if you  
haven't already, then install the gcc44 port, which includes gcc and  
gfortran.
