Gimp installation errors

I can see wanting to compile Gimp oneself, but why don't you use the precompiled package for OS X offered at http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ instead of using Gimp via a VM?
If there are any good reasons, I would really like to know them, too. This is not meant as a flame :)
