Correct, you should decide, before you install any ports, whether you want X11 or no X11, Quartz or no Quartz. You can make these selections in the variants.conf file. You should not change these settings after you've already installed ports unless you know which ones would need to be rebuilt, and in what order, and then you rebuild them.
