MacPorts portfiles generally build something from source, yes. But if you then package up that built result into an RPM, that RPM is specific to the OS version and processor architecture it was created on.

You can try to install MacPorts on your Linux box and use the "port" command there. But virtually nobody tests MacPorts on anything other than a Mac these days, and Mac OS X is the only platform we're really committed to supporting. There are probably better package managers available if Linux is the OS you want to use it on.
