"sudo port mdmg" is the only available method at this time.

I haven't tried this, but it wouldn't surprise me if it does include build dependencies, and you're probably right that it doesn't need to.

It would surprise me, however, if the build-only dependencies amount to very much space. Have you already investigated what the build-only dependencies are and how much space they occupy?
