In my experience, any errors (including those) indicate that a drive is on its way out.
You could have many months of still working drive (I've even been able to force a drive to remap those offline uncorrectable sectors before to get ioerrors to stop for a while), or you might not. For me, it's been worth it to just buy/install something new.

I'm not sure where the limitation is (usb mass storage driver, usb<->stata/usb<->ide chip), but I've never had S.M.A.R.T status (or smartmontools) be able to check on USB drives [it's also a problem for some otherwise really nice PCI IDE cards I've used to put larger capacity IDE drives in older Macs].
