Is Apache not running or is a networking issue?
you say "it can't find the server" -- this implies a networking failure.
"ps auxw | grep httpd" will show you if any servers are listening....
note if you see:
/usr/sbin/httpd -D FOREGROUND
instead of:
/opt/local/apache2/bin/httpd -k start
Then Apple's version of apache is running.
If you see either, it implies that you have some kind of local networking issue.
The fact that you did a complete re-install implies its a networking issue.
Try 127.0.0.1 instead of the name "localhost."
What happens if you try to telnet to "localhost" -- you should (probably) get a connection refused error.
