Install port without dependencies?

Your best bet is going to be to modify a copy of the portfile in your
local repository and remove the texlive dependency.  This won't
protect you from upgrades as I don't think MacPorts has a "hold back
version" feature.

The issue is that your use in this case goes against one of the goals
of MacPorts to be as self contained as possible.

Another route might be to compile rubber on your own, the portfile
doesn't look like anything tricky is going on.

Or just install texlive.  Having multiple installs shouldn't cause a
problem for TeX and it doesn't take _too_ long to install.
