One other thing to note, before I came back to Mac OS, the same machine 
had been running Debian and before that Gentoo. While they are both 
Linux distros they both compiled glib2 just fine under ppc64. Perhaps 
the differences are too great? A bit beyond my pay grade so to speak, so 
if I don't manage to resolve this I'll probably recompile the lot when I 
next get the chance.
