Error Synchronization of the local ports tree failed

Welcome to MacPorts!

You can use verbose mode to find out why it failed:

sudo port -v selfupdate

Is the rsync protocol blocked on your network? If so, you'll have to configure MacPorts for a different sync method, such as svn.
