Lots and lots of system time

Thanks! For comparison, here is my timing result, where all the dependencies of gegl were already built and installed:

  4545r   102.7u  2968.9s       port -d upgrade gegl

That's disturbing, to say the least. It tells me I don't have a small problem, I have a GIANT one. I clearly need to work much harder at trying to figure this out.
