installing py27-scipy on Mac OS 10.7

I've installed the latest macports on Lion (10.7).

Any idea why installing py27-scipy insists on building gcc44?

sudo port install py27-scipy
--->  Computing dependencies for py27-scipy
--->  Dependencies to be installed: SuiteSparse metis gcc44 gcc_select
gmp mpfr swig-python bison gsed swig

Why does scipy (or one of its dependencies) need gcc44?
