How do you get the ports directory for a port via a script?

The incompatibility is like file collisions. It may be possible to reconfigure the ports to remove the file collisions.

Have you tried the ispell variant of aspell?

port variants aspell
sudo port upgrade --enforce-variants aspell +ispell
