Macports and Octave packages

Hi list,

How does Macports handle Octave add-on packages? Does one merely install the port for the desired package(s) and it "just works" or is there a process of telling Octave where they are etc.

I still use Octave and add-ons and related plotting things all outside of Macports but I'm thinking about committing my Octave life fully to Macports, including Gnuplot and Aquaterm.
