If you go to /Applications/MacPorts/Mythtv/Myth_Stop_Start.app, it 
should show you if mysql is running.  (It can't tell if the database 
is initialized, however.)

Have you seen the wiki page and done all the "Before first run" steps?

It is critical to first initialize the database and go through all 
the Myth-Setup steps.  Could you give me more details on those?
