git-core stalling during build

That sounds a lot like the symptoms of
  http://trac.macports.org/ticket/34221,
which is fixed but the fix hasn't been released afaik.

Can you try editing /opt/local/etc/macports/macports.conf, adding
  "__CFPREFERENCES_AVOID_DAEMON"
to the "extra_env" directive, cleaning git-core and running the build
using
  sudo env __CFPREFERENCES_AVOID_DAEMON=1 port install git-core?
