Apple no longer includes an X11 server as of Mountain Lion. That was their decision.
I recommend installing the xorg-server port. This will give you /Applications/MacPorts/X11.app.
If you prefer, you can install XQuartz. It's exactly the same software as the xorg-server port, but MacPorts won't manage its updates. Personally I prefer to have MacPorts managing as many updates as it can.
