-devel ports in macports are typically prereleases intended to allow other
port maintainers to update their ports for compatibility ahead of
rereleasing the -devel as the main port. In general, you shouldn't use a
-devel port unless you know what you're doing and have specific reasons for
it. (And if you actually intend prerelease type usage and it's out of
date, you should probably start by submitting a trac ticket upgrading the
-devel port appropriately. Arguably, if you're not up to that, you should
be thinking twice about using -devel ports.)
