I got a message telling me I needed to run:
launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/org.macports.kdecache.plist
So I did (still as root). Then I got:
org.macports.kdecache: Already loaded
Run as me:
> launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/org.freedesktop.dbus-session.plist
It returned 0 (no error) and went straight back to my zsh prompt.

I got:
The file /Applications/MacPorts/kdenlive.app does not exist.
zsh: exit 1 open /Applications/MacPorts/kdenlive.app
then saw that the path was wrong, corrected it, and ran
> open /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kdenlive.app
And now it works. So which fixed it, hte launchctl run again, or running
it with open instead of using the icon in the dock?

In light of DHS's recommendation to defend yourself
against armed intruders with scissors, I'm giving
my deer rifle a new nickname: Scissors.
