My understanding is that avconv is a part of libav, and that libav is a fork of ffmpeg (for which we do have ports in MacPorts), and that the relationship between libav and ffmpeg is thorny, for example:

I don't know if it is possible for us to provide avconv and not also provide libav, and providing libav could be a problem in that I guess it would conflict with ffmpeg.
